A Message from our BB President

Hello everyone!

BIG NEWS! We will be involved in afireworks booth after all! We will be partnering with a local non-profit sharing a booth at the corner of N Chester and Day. This could be a major new source of badly needed income for us, especially in light of the still possible budget cuts. We will need adult volunteers to staff the booth. Workers must be at least 18 years of age.

And don't forget our other upcoming fund raiser, the CAR WASH on Sat May 31, 9am-1pm in the cafeteria parking lot. Mr W will be signing up student workers this week. We will also need adult volunteers. Please call me if you can help. We also need help with advance ticket sales. So far we have 86 out of 200 tickets checked out. Please encourage your student to check out tickets in the band room. Parents are also welcome to drop by before or after school to get tickets!

All schools are facing budget cuts and SMS is no exception. Our current band & guard program is in danger of some of these cuts. I would like to thank all the parents who have attended the last 3 meetings and have spoken to the Board on our behalf. I would also like to thank the many students who attend supporting our Band.  The Board has to make final budget decisions very soon. So if you can, please call 392-2110, write letters, or e-mail our superintendent, Dr. Silberberg and let him know you care. ksilberb@standard.k12.ca.us .  Even if you called once already, if it has been awhile, please make contact again!
A big thank you to all those who have volunteered to serve on our booster board for next year. I have agreed to serve again as president. I will be joined by VP Sharlene Kelly, secretary Junette McMurray, and representatives Sandra Elliott, and Lori Goodall. We are still in need of several people to fill up vacant postions.

If you have any questions please call me, Margie White @ 387-0488. Thank you.

FRESNO STATE FESTIVAL was AWESOME!
Despite 4 hours (round trip) on school buses without AC, the Warrior Band trip to CSUF 5/15/08 went very well. There were JH/MS bands from all over California. Although the judges gave no scores or ratings, they did express some opinions. Both judges went out of their way to inform me and the students that we were the best band they had heard all day. (We played at 6:30pm and the festival started at 8:30am) These judges both have NATIONAL reputations. In fact, one is internationally known as a retired Lt. Colonel and former director of THE United States Air Force band in Washington DC. The other judge is a HS director from Ohio. His program includes over 500 students and his bands have performed all over the country and in Europe as well, most recently in the 2008 Tournament of Roses of Parade.

CG Happenings

THIS WEEK ....  New Guard (2008-2009) practices MWF this week after school until 4:30pm

Winter Guard ... Well, we have now tried PPAACC winter guard, and have shown Kern County that Warrior Guard is for real, whether it is on the street or in the gym!! We won our division by a large margin in both competitions AND also outscored ALL JUNIOR GUARDS in all classes and divisions at BHS. At NHS we outscored 8 out of the 9 junior guards as well, and were only .5 behind Edison from the OPEN division. Edison has been the local power house of WG for years and years! Not bad for our first season of winter guard. You can check out scores for yourself here.
